Is The Super Mario Trailer As Bad As We Imagined?

I’m not sure how to feel about my childhood being portrayed this way, but let’s talk about the positives at least…before we talk about the negatives.

The long-awaited trailer for Super Mario Bros. debuted during a Nintendo Direct yesterday, opening onto a scene of Bowser’s impressive ship landing in front of the Penguin‘s castle? I say that because I have no idea what kingdom they represent…I just remember chucking baby penguins off a cliff in Super Mario 64…thank god the trailer didn’t have that. They come pouring out to defend their home, lobbing snowballs at Bowser (Jack Black) before he levels the castle with a flamethrower from his mouth.

Next, we get a quick peak at Toad (voiced by Keegan Michael Key) as he warns Mario not to eat a mushroom cause it might kill him, but then jokingly retracts that statement before they head out together. The trailer ends with a quick peek of Luigi running away and closing a door in classic Luigi fashion, but not much on the voice there. Hopefully his portrayal (voiced by ) will be comparable to what we get from Pratt and together, they can give us the classic whines and mannerisms we’ve come to expect from the Mario Bros.

As a teaser trailer, I think it gives us just enough detail, about the look of the world, some of the jokes land well in this first look. There’s a longer conversation to be had about Pratt, but I’ll save that for another time.

What do you think? Is the trailer good? Does it give you enough nostalgia for the video game series? Or is this going to be a dumpster fire of a movie? Let us know over on our Discord server
