Mass Effect: Andromeda – New Earth Trailer

Bioware dropped another cinematic trailer yesterday, introducing both our new antagonist as well as providing a more in-depth look at the crew that joins the Pathfinder’s team. Though there was no gameplay provided, the trailer also provided a clearer glimpse of the narrative, and how it’s beginning to take shape.

Andromeda is set 600 years after the events of Mass Effect trilogy, in the Andromeda Galaxy, where the player engages as one of the two Ryder siblings and takes the roll as Pathfinder, searching for a new planet to call home. A part of the Andromeda Initiative, the Ryder family is a part of one of four Arcs sent from the Milky Way Galaxy in search of a ‘Golden World,’–a new Earth. Alongside their father Alec, the Ryder siblings work to find resources and explore the Andromeda galaxy, facing whatever surprises come along the way.

For the first time, we get a good look at the Archon in this trailer, and the forces at his command. Backed by an impressive fleet and as implied by the dialogue, the Archon is no stranger to the Andromeda Galaxy, and has been “playing this game a long time.” It’s safe to assume that ‘this game’ is in reference to the need and search for resources, as they are limited, and seem to make up a good portion of the previous gameplay we’ve seen. We also see him pin the Tempest upon what appears to be their first meeting, which conveys both the Archon’s strength in contrast to how green our new adventurers are.

The Archon’s introduction wasn’t the only highlight of this trailer, as we get our first facetime with our Salarian pilot, Liam Kosta, and Cora Harper, as well as another look at Vetra, Peebee, and Drak. Liam and Cora in particular we’ve heard a great deal about, but this is the first we’ve seen them helmetless and in action, featuring some new gear and skill sets. Liam is the team’s Crisis Responder, and was handpicked by Alec Ryder (the player’s father) for the Pathfinder team. Cora is the team’s ops specialist, a biotic, and her resume includes serving with asari commandos, which means she’s damn good at her job. We also caught a glimpse of quality of sex in space we can expect in a scene between Scott and Cora, which gives us something additional
to look forward to.

We also meet the Angara in this trailer: a new sentient species other than the Archon. Our first interaction appears to occur when Ryder lands on their planet, and is escorted to meet with the settlement leader. Given the Pop Figure merchandise reveal that occurred this week, we can guess that Jaal is the Angara featured in the trailer, and producer Mike Gamble added that the Angara would be kissable.

With a little less than two months from launch, Mass Effect: Andromeda is looking strong and is portraying the strong cast of characters that has been their defining feature in the past. We look forward to seeing what other content they provide in the coming months, as our hopes are high for this next installment in the universe.
