“Burn, Witch, Burn!” American Horror Story: Coven (Season 3) Episode 5

The school defends itself against the zombie attack and one witch gets sentenced to burning at the stake.

**CONTENT WARNING: Violence, death, disturbing images**

Synopsis

On Halloween in 1833, Madame LaLaurie overhears her daughters plotting to kill her, so she locks them in the attic.

In the present, the girls and Madame LaLaurie hide from the zombies outside, but Nan goes out to help the neighbor, Luke. They are almost killed, but Zoe saves them by cutting up a bunch of the zombies with a chainsaw. Her chainsaw dies and she instinctively uses a spell to stop the final zombie, kicking Marie Laveau out of the spell.

How else does one fend of Evil Dead?

Cordelia has been permanently blinded by the chemical attack. Fiona waits with her until Hank arrives. When he touches Cordelia’s hand, she sees visions of his affair.

The council returns, insisting Fiona abdicate because of her incompetence as supreme, but Fiona blames everything on Myrtle, including Madison’s death and Cordelia’s disfigurement. She proves it with Queenie’s help, using her voodoo doll power to burn Myrtle’s hand to frame her for using the acid on Cordelia. Fiona sentences her to being burned at the stake, which freaks out the girls. Queenie feels guilty afterwards, but Fiona leads her to believe she’s the next supreme and that Fiona will mentor her. Secretly, Misty revives Myrtle.

Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered

The Students

Zoe shows a new power this episode. She seems the obvious choice for the new supreme, since she was established as the main character in the first episode, but she hasn’t been around much recently so it had started to seem less likely. Now she’s shown herself to be strong enough to cast Laveau out of a spell without even knowing she’s behind it.

Queenie appears to be Fiona’s next victim. I hope she wises up before it’s too late for her.

The Staff

Cordelia also displayed a new power. Of course a witch who gets blinded would get new sensory powers. Though she is a tad old to be manifesting new abilities. Maybe it was the trauma. Now she knows at least some of the problems with her husband, though it isn’t clear whether she saw the murder as well or only the cheating.

Cordelia may have lost her eyesight, but has gained an all-seeing power

Fiona, Fiona, Fiona. She is just so conniving. I can’t believe no one besides Myrtle has noticed her flaws in the forty years of her reign. She’s clearly an awful supreme who only cares about herself.

Madame LaLaurie has been turning a new leaf. She’s grown fond of Queenie and even admitted this episode that she was a horrible mother.

Conclusion

I still don’t have a ton to say about these episodes, especially after last season. But people really need to stop letting Fiona do whatever she wants just because she’s the supreme.
